UPDATE: these straps seem almost indestructible, but the red buckles have broken on the two original straps after only a couple of years and only occasional use and not being exposed to salt etc. They're made of some rather weak alloy that seems to soften or corrode pretty quickly. I've replaced one with the same kind but think I'll try these Gripwell brand ones instead, as the buckle looks sturdier and they're rated for 250kg instead of 100kg like the others (not that our kayak weighs that much, but it's on the top of the car and I like the idea of the tie-downs being over-spec'd)
We take a sponge to swab out drippy water that collects in the bottom of the boat, and a short light rope to tie up the boat at stops. A waterproof wallet thingy around my neck allows me to store car key, phone and cards securely while paddling.
